Yeah, media servers like Plex are all about the presentation. So if you want to do anything interesting in your client, you need more out of your protocol than DLNA can provide. That's because DLNA has fuck all for protocol features and metadata. The one built into my Roku TV can't do subtitles or alt language tracks for movies, and can't seem to read track numbers (even if they're the first 2 characters of the file name) for music. I've already got a perfectly good DLNA server full of movies and music, I just want a client media player that isn't attached to somebody's service and THEIR server. My 7 year old boy is now watching one of his Paw Patrol DVDs on the living room TV (which doesn't have any physical media) from his little tablet, and he commandeered it himself with no input from anyone. Which is a bit like using a supertanker to transport a glass of water. The whole thing, start to finish, was a setup and config of 15 minutes on a Dell Precision T5600 dual Xeon workstation/server running Windows Server 2019. It runs on anything, even some NAS boxes, works with everything, will cast/DLNA to nearly anything, trivially sets itself up, and only asks that you follow some naming conventions. Why? What the hell? This is like A/V's best kept secret. When setting up shared Library databases either MySQL or MariaDB can be used as they both use the same MySQL protocol.
